How (I) They Became a Designer

Close-up of blue flowers, glistening with droplets of water, creating a serene and calming atmosphere.

With seven years under my belt navigating the transition from the "Sketch era" to the modern Figma-dominated landscape, my journey has been less of a straight line and more of an expansive deep dive into how humans interact with the digital world.

The Spark

It all clicked during my Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) course. While others saw wireframes and cognitive load theories as academic hurdles,I saw them as a roadmap for the future. Something inside me lit up, I didn’t just want to make websites, I wanted to understand the why behind every click and swipe. (Yes, I was ridiculously curious at this point 😂)

That curiosity quickly turned into fuel. I teamed up with a group of like‑minded creators, and we entered a National UI/UX Competition. We pushed the boundaries of what a “student project” could be and ended up winning Best Inspiration Team. That moment was the spark. From then on, there was no turning back.

Narrowing the Path

Post-championship, my trajectory became laser focused. With the mentorship of my lecturer, I began treating my college years like a professional incubator. I took on every university project I could get my hands on, transforming theoretical problems into tangible mobile and web solutions.

By the time I landed my first official role as a UI/UX Designer, I wasn't just a novice, It's like a battle-tested designer ready for the real world.

Growing into a Versatile Collaborator

As I’ve matured, I’ve realized that great design never happens in a vacuum. I’ve moved away from being a siloed specialist to embracing the beauty of being a versatile team player.

Today, I’m grateful to spend my days syncing with motion designers to add fluidity to interactions, researchers to challenge my assumptions, and copywriters to ensure the product’s voice is as clear as its visuals. Working alongside project managers and principal designers has taught me to align every pixel with long-term business goals, making the whole process feel less like a solo task and more like a shared craft.

Why I Still Love It

Looking back at that HCI student, I’m proud of the "mature" designer I’ve become. I’ve traded the ego of the "perfect pixel" for the wisdom of the "perfect experience." Whether it’s a complex SaaS platform or a sleek mobile app, I’m here for the journey of making the digital world a little more human, one frame at a time. ❤️
